As a clock type VCO that works.  I've used the FatMan VCO 555's pin 3 output
to directly clock a flipflop for suboctave.  The caveat is that the 555 (or
7555 in my case - worlds better IMHO) sits below ground, so if you want the
clock to operate with logic devices powered by a positive supply, level
conversion is needed.  I don't think that's a big deal though.
