I agree with Magnus... running the CMOS on a split supply around ground
(+/-5, +/-7.5) has major advantages. Adding the small shunt regulators such
as LM329 does not produce much heat, draw much extra current... and provides
almost guaranteed protection against power supply interaction (soft sync) and
sensitivity (frequency stability ???)
Often, the onboard references are the difference between "acceptable" and
"superior"
