[sdiy] Reproducing plastic fader shafts / knobs at home? ~``~

As a lot of you know, it's hard finding replacement fader shafts and knobs 
for some instruments when you need them.
I've been wondering if it's possible to reproduce plastic fader shafts and 
simple knobs (like in the ARP 2600's for instance) at home in a relatively 
easy and cost effective way.
What do you guys think?  Any input would be appreciated.  Thanks!
