imho, Yes.  You need to extract the fundamental... at best you'd like the
  harmonics 'not' to be there... but they will be. Having a consistant amplitude
  is much easier to deal with than the variable situation.
  
  Another VERY good reason... if you bend a string it cannot move much
  (in angle) at the bridge. At the neck you could bend right into the next
  pole piece of the hex pickup...  oops
