The local part supplier is selling out these babies cheaply (about $7), and
I'm already placing an order for other stuff:
http://www.elfa.se/elfa-bin/setpage.pl?http://www.elfa.se/elfa-bin/dyndok.pl?dok=220856.htm
(datasheet for CS 8402 at http://www.elfa.se/pdf/73/738/07384027.pdf)
It's a DIP24 serial in -> S/PDIF out ic. Since I am crazy enough to love the
SoundBlaster OPL3 FM sound, I've been wanting to add an S/PDIF out to get
rid of noise and easy integration into the studio. Also "have a plan"
(dreaming) of adding S/PDIF to my EPS16+. (yep, can be bought, but hard to
find an expensive). And it's always nice with S/PDIF right? :-)
Would this part be useful and suitable for these types of things? To me it
looks like it would only be a matter of this chip + some passive stuff and
opamp buffering to get S/PDIF out of anything. This sounds too good to be
true, so I figured I'd ask before stocking up. Am I correct in assuming
similiar chips will be hard to come by in the future, with all the ROHS
craziness and stuff?
