It's a standard add-fat technique for analogue.
Technically it's a variant on PM, and if the mod index is low enough and/or
the oscillators are close enough in frequency it creates a kind of
freq-dependent chorus/amp mod effect.
It only sounds nasty if you crank everything up to 11 and add lots of
detuning. ;)
