It use to be that films were really that. They would be done on high contrast photo film that would give true black. I haven't done any PCB work in a long, long, long time and don't know how well the new systems work. There are a lot of other factors too like the light, exposure....

Typically when you start a new 'process' like this up you're going to 'burn' (destroy) a few boards getting exposure, light, developing, etching down to something that works for you. Might as well give it a try.
