[sdiy] synthesis type ??

I was reading recently about a type of synthesis that uses multiple
squarewaves and depends on phase cancellation to shape the timbre sounded
odd and i pass the information off, but i was recently reading aarticle that
got me intrested in this idea does anyone know what this is called ?
