The most basic way to do it was FSK. I designed a system with a tape
backup in the early 80's...for the FSK modulator, I designed a simple
circuit using a frequency divider to generate the two tones, for the
demodulator, I used an XR FSK decoder...I don't remember what the part
number was...but it was basically just a phase lock loop. And those two
items were just connected to a regular UART that was running at 300
baud. There were fancier interfaces, that could run at higher baud rates,
but FSK was by far the easiest to implement.
