[sdiy] Synth data storage on tape

A lot of old synthesizers, drum machines,... use an audio signal to
import/export from/to tape.

Is there any tool or information on how to create/read that audio signal?

Would it be possible to write a software editor which uses such audio
signals to import/export from those machines?
Or does such a program already exist (specific for one of those machines)?
