That's precisely (sorry!) the approach used in the Encore Electronics
frequency shifter.

(Not sure what's used in Doepfer's freq shifter, but how can it be so cheap?
It's the cheapest analog frequency shifter that I know of. I'm guessing that
it's not the most precise device in the rack.)
