I use a circuit board trim pot with a finger turn corrigated post. I mount them on perfboard and bring the shafts through holes on the front panel. The pots are made by a sub-division of tyco and were still available from mouser about 6 weeks ago (manufacture - MEC, mouser part number 42H... ? IIRC).
They have a short rotational life, but I've only destroyed one so far. That one so constant use on my white bread board (another subject for a survey.) This method means I don't have to use knobs and I can have lots of controls on my circuits.
There is a picture of a module using these pots on my web site. I'm on vacation, so you'll either have to do a google search or pull my website from one of my earlier posts.

. . . and I hope Katrina is not to bad. Good that it will miss us, but I would hate to have major damage in New Orleans - It's my favorite close by city.
