Dear Synth DIYers and Analog Heaveners in the Atlanta Area [and assorted
faculty of Georgia Tech],
Don Hassler at the Atlanta College of Art kindly hosted myself and several
other folks from Georgia Tech the other day in a visit to their
facilities; ever since then I've been toying with the idea of organizing
some periodic get togethers for folks interested in synthesizers in the
Atlanta area. I was thinking of trying to organize some sort of evening
get togethers at Georgia Tech - I can get meeting space, and also put out
ads to attract Tech students to the gatherings, but I'd like to do
something open to the whole Atlanta community and not just Tech students.
(I'm guessing some ACA folks would be interested). Maybe have them one a
week, or once every-other-week?
I picked up DVDs of the Moog movie, and also the "making of" classic album
series for Dark Side of the Moon (watching Gilmour recreate the On The Run
sequence on the live sequence was great) and Who's Next (Townshend talks
about using a Synthi on "Won't Get Fooled Again"). Showing of those
movies could cover three meetings; other meetings could be folks bringing
out and demoing their gear, something like a miniature AH meeting for the
Atlanta area. Maybe at some point we could organize electronic music jams
(The "New Music Circle" in St. Louis used to do such things there - I
assume they still do.) I also might be able to talk Marshall Leach into
doing a lecture on amplifier design or something like that...
I'm ccing some of our music and ECE faculty on this note (Gil, Frank,
Jason, Doug, Jeff: maybe Music would be interested in "co-hosting" such
gatherings with ECE? I'm not talking about outlaying any money - just
meeting space. And maybe popcorn for the movie nights. Popcorn! I find
popcorn machines to be very musical.)
If you're an Atlantan with potential interest in such gatherings, e-mail
me back directly; I don't want to clutter up the AH and sdiy lists with
messages that will only be relevant to those of us in Atlanta. Let me know
your ideas for meetings. Maybe we wouldn't always meet at Tech - maybe
meet at ACA one night; maybe Eyedrum would be interested in hosting
something? (I was thinking about Tech since many of our students don't
have cars...) This is all at the brainstorming stage. Don't be mislead
into thinking I actually have anything resembling a plan.
Given recent events, maybe our first meeting should be a showing of the
"Moog" movie, along with folks bringing out their Moogs - whether real
Mini, Micro, Poly, etc... along with laptops running their software Moog
emulations. Then, we make noise on our Moogs! Yes! Moog moog moog! More
moogs!
- Aaron, who admits to having no Moog except a broken Minitmoog
P.S. If you're in Atlanta, my choir is performing tomorrow at 3:00 on
Sunday. (That's in 13 hours). If you're looking for something to do, check
out the DeKalb Choral Guild website at dcguild.home.mindspring.com and
click on "performances." It's at the First United Methodist Church of
Marietta; you'll find directions on the website. It's the American "kick
off" to the European tour to Germany and the Czech Republic we're starting
next week.
