well... imho for smokin' my favorites are those
mexican Allen-Bradley Type J's... but at 1.25" diameter
they burn the panel space badly.

I'd probably choose Clarostat in the 1/2" square format
if price was no object (like the old Bourns Mod-Pot)

Another total favorite of mine is the 1/2" round with 1/8"
shaft (also Clarostat these days, they used to be Allen Bradley)

For the cheap-os I like the Alpha in the what, 16mm format. Like
a buck each with a pretty nice feel.  I used them as pot-of-choice
for the Muffy and Guitar Synth stuff.
