This reminds me of the Russian ANS synth. They created the music as images
scraped into some sort of goo on a glass plate, which was read optically.
It was used on a few Russian sci-fi clasics.
I've occasionally considered trying a DIY version using an old fax machine
or scanner, but good sense usually prevails.
