Also, forget the recommended 3x 555 timers!  Perhaps 1x 7555 timer might 
be interesting for some things (e.g. envelope generator), but much more 
important are some opamps: get some TL072s (dual opamps) and/or TL074s 
(quad op-amps) - these are good for many many things including 
distortion effects and filters!

And of course some LEDs are always good for opamp based distortion 
circuits .. try combinations of 2 reversed parallel LEDs + resistors + 
capacitors in different parrallel/serial combinations in the feedback 
loop of an inverting opamp circuit...
