The EFM ladder most closely resembles the
Taurus I filter, in the use of the OTA recovery amp.
WE have to remember that none of us design in a
vaccuum. Most of our designs are based on previous
work.
A fundamental extractor design I'm using was based on
a patent (expired) from New England Digital
(Synclavier). The circuit itself is derived from a
design idea that was published in in Electronics
magazine for recovering a human respiration signal
from a baseline.
Who should I credit for this idea ???
New England Digital ?
The original design ?
Bob Widlar (for the opamp design ???)
When I did the PV-1 pitch to voltage converter, I
contacted Bob Moog because it was based on his
Etherwave P/V design. I changed it substantially...
His technique was not new, 360 Systems and many others
do it the same way. I chose to ask his permission
(which strictly I need not have done...) to use the
design. He asked for a message on the board "based on
Etherwave P/V, used with permission"... and a board
for
himself. I chose to comply because he was nice, and
it
saved me development time from R&D'ing my own (trivial
but still time consuming :^)
"Envelope Follower combines fast response, lowest
ripple" (by me) published in EDN is another example.
This is a new design, its not cloned from anyone,
although the circuit configurations (peak detectors
etc) are in no way unique or original. The invention
here *is* mine. Published in EDN, anyone can use it,
credit me or not... but probably I can still claim
bragging rights.
And that's what we are really talking about. Bragging
rights... recognition... for our contributions to
s-diy. Take what is yours.
Monowave ??? An adaptation of the PPG wave. Credit
where due.
EFM VCF-2E ??? An adaptation of the Moog Taurus I
filter. Credit where due.
We are not talking about 'stolen designs' here. These
are no way clones like the Beringer knock-offs or the
Boss effects... right down to the look and feel.
Ask yourselves... (if you are doing a clone design)
"what part of this is mine, and what did I inherit"
How many of you have given credit to Terry Michaels
(Mikaulic sp?) who invented the sawtooth VCO core as
we know it today. Clone a Moog VCO and you are using
HIS work, na ???
