We use Stereo microscopes for doing rework and hand-soldering for fine
pitch parts when we do stuff in-house, and yes, they're pricey... probably
a kilobuck or more for some good ones. As I always say though, where
there's a will, there's eBay. You can always find used test equipment
there that suits even the home engineering consulting business.
For general discrete and SO work though, a solid magnifying lamp should be
good. If Luxo is too rich - try your local supermart or bargain store.
Usually there are magnifying desklamps for $15-$25US.
