I became aware of Electronic music in the spring of 1967, mainly as an
outgrowth of listening to Rock/Soul/R &B, I was just 13. That summer I was taken
to the Montreal World's Fair, and in the entrance to the US Pavilion stood the
first Moog Synthesizer I'd ever seen, and was knocked over completely. I'd
just begun studying Saxophone and Flute, and was a child of the SpaceAge, so this
thing captivated me! After a demonstration, I sought out a bugged Dr. Moog
with a thousand silly Teenage questions, and his response was to "study Music,
Mathematics and prepare for a career in Electronics. I bugged him for 3 days,
and never got to see the other exhibits at the fair because THIS WAS IT! THE
FUTURE OF MUSIC was the Moog.
That fall and spring, I hunted down every Electronic Music recording I
could find, and began to be really involved with "Progressive Rock" music; my
musical education proceeded, and finally I was able in 1979 to get my hands on a
Synthesizer, and finally returned to university to finish my BSEE at age 52!
I've been building Synths since 1986, and still give full credit to Dr. Moog
for the inspiration.
I'm just fortunate to have lived during a time when Musical genius was at a
high level,(Coltrane, Hendrix, Miles, Sun Ra, Duke, Stockhausen, Moog) and
experimentation seemed a lot less risky than now! Bob Moog was never afraid to
experiment, and his influence on Music Technology is profound, and I'll honor
him by adopting "VOLTS-PER-OCTAVE" as a "Moog" in further circuit construction,
and on my schematics
