Thanks to everybody, I wasn't expecting so many replies! I'll look up  
your suggestions and keep you posted.

For those who asked, I do have some soldering experience.

As for the modularity issue, I feel compelled to add to the  
discussion. I think that in order for a synth to be modular, you  
should be able to move its components around, both physically, and  
algorithmically in the soundpath, like swapping out an LFO for a VCA.  
Perhaps the reason why the line between modularity and non- 
modulartity is so gray is that a lot of modular synths aren't 100%  
modular and have some limitations. Personally, if a machine can be re- 
patched like I want most of the time, I consider it modular. Also,  
from a non-technical perspective, if you can keep adding  
functionnality and complexity to a synth by spending more money, it's  
got to be somewhat modular.
