Friends of mine went to see a similar instrument in 1989 or 1990. This one was
acoustic though. I believe the whole thing was made of wood. There were long
strings - reeeeal long strings, like 25 or 30 feet. They were stretched across a
bridge which rested on a large soundboard. It was set up in an empty gymnasium
and everyone gathered around. The player and inventor, a woman whose name I've
forgotten, used a rosin impregnated cloth to make the strings sound. Like the
beam, they say the sound had a compelling effect. Everyone kind of fell under
its spell and spontaneously started walking slowly around it. People talked
about it for days. I still kick myself for not going.
