A lot of the secondhand programmers on eBay at giveaway prices seem to be
missing their driver software, or use dedicated ISA cards for their PC
connection, so beware if your PC is too up-to-date!
Anyway, all DIYers will no doubt prefer to build their own, and the defacto
seems to be those from Willem (www.willem.org). They seem to be a kind of
open source hardware project, which means that the driver software is freely
downloadable and everything is regularly updated to cater for new devices.
You can just buy a PCB (about 15 euro) and stuff it with parts from your own
stock, which is what I did (though to my eternal shame I haven't got round
to testing it yet, and probably won't until I actually NEED it for
something).
The Willem boards will do down to 2716s (with an extra pinout adaptor).
Unfortunately they won't do 2708s - but not much will :-(
