Well, the US Cliiff guy told me it was form a crappy design, augmented by
lousy manufacturing by the Cliff factory in Asia. The have other
manufacturing facilities which were not making defective jacks even with the
old design. Quoting Cliff here - don't shoot the messenger!

Cliff is willing to take back stock of unsoldered 'old' design jacks for a
full exchange on the news ones. If A. Sol is shipping with the old ones
still they need not. The problem is determining which is which. You can
see a difference in the spring design - but who in the hell wants to go
through a huge bag and look for onesey's? In the US< the minimum purchase
qty is 100 pieces. A lot of lookin' involved there.

If you'r not dong your won assembly, then the problem is even easier to
purge. You can send memo's, make diagrams and ask them to purge the old
ones out - but who knows if it's gonna happen?
