Aha! I think that answers my question perfectly.
I should mention that I know of at least one audio app that used an LM308: 
The Peavey Hotfoot Distortion pedal.

I have one. Well now it's in pieces about to become an auto-wah built around 
a Crybaby-style wah. I even have the big ol' inductor. But I read about the 
original inductors and I don't think mine will sound the same. I tried 
hooking it up to a few 9V batteries in succession as they ran out to see if 
I could partially magnetize it because I read that that's what gave it its 
character. Slight DC bias magntizing it and creating even-order harmonics. I 
think that was the idea. My idea of trying to magnetize it with a battery is 
probably pretty hare-brained though...
But I digress...
