         Now all they need is a box that plays a selection of 1960s sit-com 
laugh tracks and the picture will be complete.

Honestly, I use to build crap like this when I was 10. Only I somewhat 
euphemistically called them "Synthesizers." There were other things in 
common too. Like, I had little idea how a synthesizer worked back then 
either. The word "Stability" wasn't even in my vocabulary at that point. 
But at least mine looked the part. Built into old wooden fruit crates with 
cheap plywood front panels. I've progressed a long way since then. At least 
my front panels don't have as many splinters now.

Some years later I even had a pair of TI sound chips. I think I even 
managed to make one last about 3 days until I let the smoke out. Ah. Those 
were the days. Breadboards, BBD chips and lots of smoke. But I didn't 
inhale. Well not much anyway. That stuff can warp your mind.

Oh well. Back to the ol' octolinear flux capacitor.
