[sdiy] MIDI handshaking?

Hey all.

I'm working on a PIC based MIDI knob device, where 4 pots
simply send continuous controller information out.

My question - Is there a handshaking protocol to ensure
delivery of the MIDI signal b/w my device & some other device?
I've scoured the web for any information on this, and I can
not find any.  As far as I can tell, as long as I have a 31.25 kbaud
rate from my device, whatever is sent is simply interpreted
by whatever it's sent to.

Am I far off?  If so, how does a MIDI device set up the MIDI
transaction FROM an out device TO an in device?
