Is it not possible to just replace the EL foil instead of the entire
display? EL foils you can get from various places.

I did such a procedure with my FZ-1; opened the LCD carrier, removed the
LCD, and then exchanged the EL foil. I then reassembled the LCD unit
again, just to take it apart another time and flip the EL foil to have
the LCD illumnated and not the back of the plastic carrier. Don't laugh.

The only tricky part is soldering the connector to this foil, but with
low heat and fast soldering it's manageable.
