I can highly recommend taking such a seminar; also Xilinx itself does
workshops, and it's really interesting to see how one can do "DIY SoC"
at home.

In case one already has EDK (or wants to do it "the hard way" using
ISE) and therefore doesn't want to go for the Memec board, I can also
recommend the Suzaku boards from Atmark Techno

Take one of those, just add serial DACs, and have the worlds smallest
synth up and running, which can even be controlled via Ethernet.
