If you're going to write a driver for USB to directly control an analog
output, then it would make sense to get an Omega D4000 or equivalent and
just write a sequencing app. for it.

By doing this you're only bypassing MIDI however, and for what it's
worth it's probably not too hard to build a D4000 from scratch.
