Thats a very good point. You can't trust manufacturers not to discontinue a
part unexpectedly, so if you want to be confident you can get the parts you
need, a multi-sourced CPU is a big plus.
The '51 derivative's ubiquity is a big selling point.

Especially if they support in-application programming - then you can write a
firmware loader that runs over midi.
That makes life so much easier.
