Good question, which was actually my third consideration with potting.  In a
perfect world, one would simply replace the expo board. If not potted, then
one could use a heat gun to heat up the joints of the blown tranny and and
pull it out carefully once everything is molten.

Specifically to this circuit though the chances of this happening aren't
great.  The boardlette is keyed so it pretty much impossible to plug in
backwards andThe expo converter is buried deep within the circuit.  Damage
from outside stimuli (excessive VC for instance) would have a hard time
making it's way this deep. And the VCC lines are protected on board via
current limiters,  so even if you were to plug the power in backwards it
won't damage the circuit, unless we're talking some ungodly DC level like 50
volts or something.
