I'm back - I can supply the beach, the rain for paul perry, and for good measure
80-90 knot winds with gusts to 130!
Hurricane Ivan the terrible caused quite a bit of damage in our area, and even
more 50 miles to the west. I lost branches, one full tree, a quarter of my
roofing, threes sides on my fence and the front porch. The good news is I gained
the neighbors shed - with some stuff still in it - unfortunately he kept the
floor. A tree fell on my work shop, but it was supported enough by another tree
to do very minor damage. It didn't even nock over the three sequencer modules I
had just completed and left standing on the work bench.
We lost water for 3 hours, freedom to move around for 2 days followed by a 7
P.M. to 7 A.M. curfew for three days, power for 6 days and my phone lines were
finally fixed yesterday. I lost my TV antenna - but that doesn't matter - the
Stations lost theirs also. It was eerie watching the stations disappear one by
one. When the last station went, we switched over to radio which was
simulcasting the weather and storm information (the TV stations had reporters
near the beaches and a weather radar system). Then the radio stations started
disappearing.
By morning, we could pickup on very local radio station - their tower is 1/2
mile away and unfortunately still standing (ask me about keeping RF out of
electronics!) The other two stations we could pick up were a 100 miles on
either side of were the storm hit.
When the curfew was lifted, we got to see all the damage - lots of boats, trees,
and construction material where it shouldn't be - including my tree in the
neighbors pool and my front porch on the side of the house. (I think it may have
gone over the roof instead of around and over the fence, but who knows - I
wasn't going to go outside and watch.
Water was up three feet on the fence near a local church. That puts it 6-8 feet
above sea level two blocks from the water. Our house is 12 feet above sea level
and three blocks from the water so no flooding. The barrier island 1/4 mile from
the main coast were we are was under water. The radio was reporting 40 to 50
foot storm surge / wave combinations just off shore.
See - I got it back to waves and surf. However, if you are going to use a
recording of waves and surf you need to do it right after a hurricane - no
traffic noise - to early for generator noise - no power fields to cause hum -
just that d**m RFI.
