Say WHAT? Dog-breakfast?! Battery powered synths are a rare and
wonderful thing.

Most synths which I know of use +/-12v or +/-15v. Most crucial factors
are that it be bipolar (+/-) and a linear supply (as opposed to
switching supplies as are used in computers).
My first non-battery powered audio project was building power supplies,
since I knew I'd need them. Transformers need to be center-tapped for
bipolar supply and ground. These will usually be listed as "VCT", as to
say "35 VCT" being 35 volts, center tapped. Some filter capacitors,
rectifier diodes, and regulator ICs and you are golden. A 1 Amp supply
can power a fair amount of synth.
There are quite a few companies out there who offer linear power
supplies, many of them are excellent, but pricey. I have a small stack
of PowerOne linear supplies which I got for fairly cheep. For a place
where you can find overstock of decent linear supplies, I'd check the
listings at Brigar Electronics. They often have some good supplies for
reasonable prices.
