I think you've nailed it right there! It is not random. My first
experience with this IC is in the MG-1 I've been playing with this
month. The output of the 5837 is like a short loop of bad noise, with
noticable click when it repeats. This can be kind of fun, as instead of
random pitches and modulations, I get psuedosequences.

Extremely cool, I have always wanted to play with one of these. Though
for your next try, maybe you'll use a noise source which is more
random. Zener / transistor noise is quite evenly distributed and
aperiodic. Even a 4006 yields WAY better noise than a 5837. If you use
a CMOS shift register then you can also vary the clock rate of the
noise, which can be quite fun.
