Know what? I had never found the MM5837 datasheet until tonight. I
then I posted it before looking at it. Upon review, I see that the
clock is internal to the chip. I had previously assumed the use of an
external clock. Hmm...

I also see that the cycle time is 1.1 to 2.4 seconds. Maybe the supply
voltage affects the clock rate? You might want to test it. (My "under
a second" estimate, based on my memory, was slightly off. Looks like
I'm a few bits short, too. ;-)

Note that "the shift register starts at a random non-zero state when
power is applied." Your experiment, Peter, should have different
results after cycling the power. If so, you could use a momentary
power off switch as a "randomize" button.
