I'm going to guess that those people who have pulled SID chips to play
with are the ones who are most likely to be using them! I purchased my
two Commodore 64 computers (1x 6581 and 1x 8580) for $5 each, complete
with SID chips. C 64s are plentiful around here, but replacement SID
ICs are more rare and expensive.
Last year I made an audio/video adaptor for my older 64, connected it
to my found bigscreen television and my room mates little guitar crate
amp. Running CyberTracker < http://noname.c64.org/tracker/ > on it for
a couple of weeks was a blast, but much too linear for my musical
style. One of my current projects is that of reproducing Frank
Prindle's 6850 MIDI interface <
http://www.df.lth.se/~triad/triad/ftp/MIDI/C64MIDI-INTERFACE.TXT > (to
be built into the case), to run with Triad's "MIDIslave Manager"
Despite the hype, I think that the SIDs sound is of a wonderful
character. The modulation routings are few and hardwired, but the
switchable modes and arpegiation can be a lot of fun.
