I used to work with a guy that was an HP-41 nutcase.

He had a machined "cradle" made out of stainless steel that connected to the 
internal data bus and the 4 ROM slots in the back. The cradle contained:

a) ASCII keyboard
b) printer port
c) 20MB hard drive (hey this was like 1988)
d) 320 x 200 B/W video

This guy programmed the microcode to run all this stuff (homebrew OS) and THEN 
wrote a WordPerfect clone that ran in the calculator! He did all of his word 
processing on this thing!
