Sorry that I can't be very helpful about this, but the MIDI spec, for
instance, is not "hot pluggable" probably because of this increased
complexity. As Rene was suggesting, RS 485 might yield some interesting
comments about such things.

I have only recently started becoming interested in serial data
communications, I really don't know very much. Can you recommend any
good books on the topic?
