I own a S-760 too. The picture with the composite video output is 
indeed bad, there are strong artefacts from the chroma channel (correct 
term?). Never tried a modulator, but it can only be worse.
But the picture I get with the S-VHS output is really good. I use a 
small old b/w TV retrofitted with a video input (DIY content here!), so 
only the Y part of the S-VHS signal is used.

Some S-760's (mine too) can be switched between NTSC and PAL mode, 
which would mean different scan rates. Perhaps it it would work better 
in one or the other mode? There are S-760's out there that can't be 
switched, I guess it's just a matter of the firmware. The switching can 
be done when the "Mode" buttor is held down during power-up. It's the 
5th item in the setup menu.
