Thanks for all the tips everyone!!!

Batz: the "scope" of the project prohibits me from using recordings, so
sampler players or tape loops or whatever are out. That was my first
choice too, but I was overruled.

As far as the Marpac; I can't just buy a ready-made one; the whole idea is
that local artisans (a category into which I guess I just barely fit) must
create each part of the project "from scratch". Perhaps I could buy
something from Ebay and repackage it, but I think the guys running
this expect me to bring in a homemade metal box with sharpee on it that
says "surf's up!!" or something.....

I am going to call PAIA to see if they have any surfmen left (I like the
idea of getting two for stereo): at $14 for the PCB's and $15 for the
manual, and probably junk box parts to finish it out, it will probably
stay within the budget. I also figure PAIA can tell me if there are
impossible to find parts in it (does anyone in the group remember, from
having built them long ago?)--if there are, and I don't have ' em, I am
probably going to resort to Cynthia's suggestion.

As I am sure you are on the edges of your seats about this, I will let
everyone know what happens when I get this done.
