[sdiy] Metal detector wands as duphonic theremin?

I'm sort of serious about this. Is there any reason why you couldn't use
two of those wand-style metal detectors as a duophonic theremin? Has anyone
done this before? I think a couple of wand detectors could probably be
purchased for a reasonable price, and you could always pass their audio
outputs through a volume pedal (or possibly a pair of pedals) for more
control over the sound.
