This is what we call an analog computer. A REALLY analog computer.

Years ago (well before personal computers), in the Amateur Scientist column
in Scientific American, C.L. Stong built a similar though less
sophisticated device. It ranks right up there with the supersonic
windtunnel with a false color Schlieren apparatus as one of his great DIY
projects. Being able to see the shockwave coming off a bullet in real-time
sounds like fun to me.
