I apologize for the nostalgic content but it's a true story.
In the old days, a lot of engineers were radio amateurs. Part of it, I
think, was guys from the Signal Corp. going to engineering school under the
GI bill. The "Hams" were always the kindest and most generous with their
time and knowledge. I am indebted to all those great guys, and I simply
can't say enough good things about them.
When I was a kid in the 60's, I was crazy about electronics, and literally
banged on the door of any engineering firm under "Electronics" in the phone
book (only 3 in Racine, WI). Not only did the engineers talk to me, they
gave me parts to play with (the brand new CK722 and 2N107) and books. I got
my 1965 ARRL handbook that way.
