I use a Weller with the temperature controlled tip. Almost exclusively 
I use a PTA7 tip. 700° seems just right for me, (too much waiting 
around with a 600° tip, but those are good for more delicate jobs). I 
tend not to like the variable irons - after much use, I know exactly 
how my 700° tip will act and I can get in and out quick...

At this point it all really comes down to technique and personal 
preferences...
