I might mention a little soldering aid that I have... invented in the 50's
by the company I formerly worked for. It was a little U shaped stand
(think of two bookends about 2" apart) with bristle brushes on the
inside, facing each other. There is a gap about  1/16" between the tips
of the bristles (natural, not polymer bristles).

A quick swipe of the soldering iron between the bristles
and it is clean. Less fuss than using
a sponge, and no heat loss.  Careful because the tiny solder dust it will
leave behind can be a (toxic eh?) mess.  I put a cookie pan under mine, and
clean it once every few years.
