a)  the resistor value makes no difference at all. They are use as a voltage
divider so that the transistor "above" the previous is at least 1 Vbe drop
higher than the one below.

b) you are correct the MG-1 VCF saves a whopping 12 cents on leaving out the op
amp summer. This is a common Moog 'trick', even the Moog 904s use the base input
resistance as "high enough for rock and roll".
