There is some truth to this. There are files in the OS which explain
what sort of hardware is likely to be encountered, these are just text
or XML lists. The kewl thing is that lots of drivers are built-in, but
the stoopid thing is that CD and DVD drives are pretty standard anyway.
The OS is way too cautious compared to Toast, which comes with a huge
drive database. A few people make utilities which simply patch the
supported drive list to include yours, and indeed one can just add it
to the list with a text editor.

I know it'd be that much easier if this was automatic, but it only
takes a minute to tweek. Disclaimer: though I am very Mac and burning
experienced, I have no experience with external USB or FireWire
peripherals. Lastly, prior to buying any hardware for computers, I
research its compatability online.
