Not that I want to diminish the invention of the Leslie speaker, but I
doubt that it's accurate to call it "the first modulation effect." I've
seen pipe organs from circa 1900, with what look like steamboat paddle
wheels suspended over the pipes. This surely produced a somewhat similar
effect, and is certainly modulation. I would be very surprised if even this
were the first modulation effect.

Anyone care to hazard a guess on the very first modulation effect? Perhaps
a drumhead that can be adjusted in tension while playing?
