Paul,
You know my experience that Analog Devices has always been supportive of DIY
efforts even before they had their "small order" desk.
So from my experience i think it was harder to get SSM when they where stand
alone or when PMI owned them. If you follow the literature from the
beginning it looks like the real attrition of SSM synth leaning was after
the PMI buyout. All the sudden the datasheets either understated or deleted
ref's to synth's.
But like all analog, if it doesn't "place" into a cell phone or other
commodity it's gone. So even the discretes you build with are a target
(sadly).
regards,
p

Well, I doubt that s-DIYers will make any kind of dent in SSM's bottom
line...
I've heard that Mackie's digital boards are chock full of SSM VCAs (as
is their automation system for analog boards IIRC), not to mention lots
of other companies' products. So SSM probably has a captive market for
years to come. What SSM does is pretty frustrating, though, especially
if you're a DIYer. And until recently, their stuff wasn't easy to get,
except maybe as samples. (I know Digi-Key started carrying a lot more
of the esoteric AD/SSM stuff this year).
