[sdiy] OT: Hurricane Frances

I spent my vacation with kids and girlfriend in Orlando with Charley... It
went right over us.
Kinda wierd, like what if it was going to be 50 miles from where I was -
would I drive there to experience it?? Well, heck yes :-). Rental car - no
liability because it is an act of God. We watched from our 16th story hotel
window. Transformers popping all over making blue "explosions" on the
horizon. Like being in Bagdad in the invasion.
I don't understand that state though. Gas stations couldn't pump gas, no
one seemed to care much about it. No one bought emergency supplies until 2
hrs before it was going to hit. The damn traffic signals went out. Cops
sat at intersections and watched, and when they did direct traffic it was
slower than without them. The radio stations played canned music all day
long - no local emergency news stations for information. We relied on a
Classic Rock station where the DJ's volunteered to take calls all day. No
newspapers and the tv antennas were down for days. People were and probably
still are without power gas ice etc. and that is all across the state.
Freeways were clogged with all the people from Tampa that were told to come
to Orlando... Following thunderstorms were extremely nasty, caving in roofs
at the airport terminal, lightning striking the pavement thus closing the
ramps. I'm impressed with Disney - their parks were up and running with
very minimal damage. Man, though, in several areas trees snapped in half,
roofs torn off just from the winds. Tornado watches while you look up and
see the clouds begin to circle... It made the trip memorable that is for
sure.

Just a quick note: don't forget to send good thoughts / karma / wishes /
prayers to those in South Florida as Hurricane Frances heads in to shore.
This storm sounds like it's going to hit hard, with winds of 145 mph (It's
rated a "4", the absolute worst possible is a 5). John M is down there, and
I'm sure there are others (even non-SDIYers) who need our thoughts and
prayers.
